Lifescapes of emotional labour in farming support organisations: An exploration using visual methods https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0743016725002475

This research explores the hidden emotional labour of volunteers and workers in farming support organisations. While much attention is given to farmers’ wellbeing, less is known about those who provide care in times of crisis. Using creative methods – particularly participant-led photography and photo-elicitation interviews – the study examines how these individuals sustain themselves amidst the demands of their roles. Findings reveal five key sources of support, or “lifescapes”: daily routines, relationships with animals, communities of care, the power of place, and family. These lifescapes provide grounding, resilience, and renewal. The study highlights the importance of valuing emotional labour in the third sector and demonstrates how creative methods can generate rich, participant-led insights into rural wellbeing.

Exploring Collaboration

Much of my work is grounded in collaboration and conversation. Whether within academia or alongside charities, community groups, and wider Third Sector, I am always interested in exploring how my research and experience might support others. If you think there is potential to work together I’d be delighted to explore possibilities with you.
